Not a clear project, but focusing on rock ’n roll as a culture and a lifestyle, and possibly a industry. San Francisco is one of the most important cities in the history of rock, but is far more than just ”loud music on the radio annoying old and boring people”. Rock is kool – and never too loud!

… Media - Kao & Company is located in the San Francisco Presidio, which is a significant concentration of digital/new/internet media practitioners. John will bring professionals to the table who will conduct a session on the use of guerilla media (digital video) as a "bottom up" approach to journalism, documentary filmmaking, and sense making. It is possible that one or more students will be interested in using video as a student project, perhaps to document the overall process of working in San Francisco, working on wicked problems etc. That could be the subject of a tutuorial that goes beyond the initial orientation session.

… Kao & Company as a set of projects - Kao & Company is in the midst of developing an enhanced portfolio of consulting tools, practices, templates and processes that relate to embedding strategic innovation within public, private and 4th sector organizations. It is also considering a variety of options for scaling/internationalizing its activities. It is intended that Kao & Company's strategy, as well as specific aspects of its tool development program could become specific student projects.
Wicked Problems
… Wicked problems as a set of projects - A major current focus on Kao & Company's activities is working on specific large-scale problems through the lens of the innovation practices that Kao & Company has developed. Examples of such wicked problems include: clean water, alternative energy, learning, climate change, security, and the future of politics. Each of these wicked problems could be a student project, to be pursued under the direction of Kao & Company and oriented towards defining and researching the problem as well as validating a process for addressing it.
Cooperation/community
… Orientation to collaboration using social internet applications - Kao & Company intends to provide a working prototype of its social internet application to the KaosPilot team, which will allow the students to interact with one another, and with the knowledge other members of the community have, and in new ways. Functionality includes:
a. Flexibly tagging anything that is "interesting" on the internet, in other words anything that carries a URL b. Sharing tags with other members of the community c. Creating shared documents that represent the current level of shared knowledge d. Visualizing interaction patterns in the community - who tags what? What else are they interested it? How close are their interests?
Ultimately, the social internet application can enable the KP student group to become a global team of cool-hunters, continuously generating knowledge and awareness of the environment that will be of interest to others. The purpose of sharing the social internet application with the KP team include:
a. Allowing them to generate knowledge as a team more effectively b. Prototyping the cool-hunting network concept, which Kao & Company sees as an opportunity with potential commercial value. c. Creating a capability that could be relevant to the entire KaosPilot alumni organization.
We will need 1-2 people within the student team who will take the lead on this project and perhaps take responsibility for an overall project based on the technology.

12 examples of Next Generation of businesses
The ambition of the KaosPIlot International is to be part of creating the next generation of business – partly through the creation of the next generation of business school, but not limited to that. The assignment would be divided in finding out on how to identify them (maybe by creating a scheme and/or an evaluation model) as well as actually finding some, describing them and to communicate what is special about them. Probably there are many, many different examples out there - maybe one can use the current understanding of the phenomena of the 4th sector; explore and develop it further. Furthermore; the unfinished, but intriguing, concept of “nourishment for life” could also be explored and developed further. Both of these concepts could provide the basic understanding of what prerequisites need to be in place for these organizations to emerge, but also what characteristics one would demand to be “visible” in order to describe them as Next Generation of Business.
Cool hunting business
This idea came up in conversation with John Kao and it would be exciting to figure out what actually could be done – starting with the KaosPilots and the capabilities of the students and staff. What is “it”? Can the potential services be described and priced? Who should be the customers? How would one fight of competition? What methods should be used - innovation processes?
KaosPilot Consultancy in Europe
KaosPilot provide consultancy services today – mainly teaching others what you as students learn, or teaching on how he staff teaches you (hereunder methods and techniques). Coaching, Recording etc, comes from the US. There are probably other exciting companies today - like Grove, IDEO, Idea factory etc was exciting (and still is-;)) in the mid 90ies – who are they and what do they do? Can it be introduced in Europe? What would it require in order for KPI to engage with these companies and incorporate them in Europe?

You are invited to think out of the box when defining the range and scope of the school. Especially you should focus on market analysis and marketing of the school – as wells as the financial aspects of running a school in the US. Who should study here? Who are they? How should they finance their studies? The cultural aspect and hereunder terminology and values – how should this be addresses? (This assignment could also be a part of the next assignment, but not necessarily)

Native Americans
There is activity regarding leadership, ceremonies, sustainability in nature and many more topics within the native american organizations. I have began to do some research on the net regarding this subject and I "found out" that there is for ex. an university in the US based on native culture and that there is many NGO´s and groups with native people that are working towards something that could go under the title NFL. I think that doing something with "these people" would grant us huge learning. This is not a specific project at the moment, it is more about using other kind of knowledge and view in what ever we will do.
Business/ Svenskt, Danskt, Norskt Näringslivet/ Handelskammaren
If the business part is going to be existing in our exam/ outpost project I do believe that these organizations would be a very good contact and they would give us something that we are kind of missing - hardcore business knowledge. These people make the money spin and know how and what the differences between the Nordic countries and the US business life is. To be contact and to be handed a proposal of what to do. Concrete idea´s are a little blurry at the moment.
