Outpost Assignment 2010

Provide 100 examples of initiatives that produce a Better City, Better Life The purpose of the assignment is to create an instruction manual for better life in cities, to be used by individuals and organizations on a grass-roots level in cities around the world, to deepen their knowledge, inspire their work, and build ideas, possibilities and connections. This assignment constitutes the starting shot of a worldwide effort to improve the lives of as many citizens as possible, building on the fundament created by the Shanghai 2010 exposition, and specifically focusing on 100 implementable grass-roots initiatives.

Why? The need from the client/the Kaospilots

The Kaospilots aims to be the best school for the world. In order to do this we want to develope, test and share knowledge on how to make the world a better place.

In line with being the “best school for the world”, the KaosPilots wish to produce a book consisting of 100 examples of initiatives that produce a Better City, Better Life.

With this book we want to share knowledge, inspire and motivate people on a local level to contribute to make the world a better place.

In the process of creating this book, we want to activate the great network the Kaospilots all ready have a good relationship to AND to expand the it.

The Kaospilots is known for making things happen. Therefor the book should be designed, written, visualized and shared in a way that makes the most people capable of actively contributing to make the world a better place.

Why Shanghai?

Shanghai is host to the 2010 world expo, in which 192 of the world’s countries and an expected 70 million people gather to explore what produces a better life in cities. By exploring through the lens of Shanghai and the World Expo the social, economical and environmental challenges the citizens of the world face in years to come, the team is expected to identify, prioritize and describe 100 initiatives that will make a real difference to people’s lives.

Shanghai is to be used as an experimentarium that, due to the world attention, resources, and focus by existing civilizations on emergent properties, enables a unique space in witch to unfold, direct and try out new ways of improving city life to the benefit of citizens. In this way the KaosPilots will do their part in fulfilling the aim of the 2010 Expo: Better City, Better Life.

What is the assignment, exactly?

The assignment is to publish a Do-It-Yourself book for grass-roots organizations, municipalities and individuals. The guide covers how to implement 100 initiatives in large cities, and in so doing the team must: • Map out grass-roots initiatives that improve the social and environmental welfare of people living in cities. Use an opportunity sample of Scandinavian cities (primarily Århus) and Shanghai. • Select the 100 most impactful and implementable examples, appraised by worth to the local community, ease of implementation, and local motivational value. • Maintain an online presence with daily reflections throughout the semester, sharing progress, reflections and learning with outpost stakeholders.

So, what’s the timeline?

The semester begins February 1st, and the team leaves for Shanghai on March 15th. The semester exam and assignment deadline is the 11.06.2010 kl. 12.00. Presently the exam is set to June 15th. The exam will be held in conjunction with a launch/goodbye party in Shanghai. The outcome and plans for further implementation of the 100 initiatives for better lives in cities will also be presented by the team in the fall of 2010 in Århus, as part of the first day of KaosPilots White Week, which this year has the title “Better City, Better Life”.
