Homebase Internet
This page tries to capture current status and planned changes to Internet access and services at Homebase.
Current status
Homebase is linked to the Internet through an ADSL connection (8Mbit/512kbit) to Unotel (usung TDC resources).
Homebase owns a server offering the following services to Homebase member organisations:
Static websites (currently used only by CaféKølbert)
- Shared wiki website
- Webmail
- Personal email addresses
- Organisational email addresses
- Target-group mailinglists (these are being phased out!)
- Topic-oriented mailinglists
- Windows filesharing
- Macintosh filesharing
KP additionally use the following external ressources:
- Website (ASP-based CMS) at Digitalis Internet
FL additionally use the following external ressources:
- Website (PHP-based CMS) at Novicell
Future options
Firewall logic can be improved to more fairly share the available bandwidth between active users. Work on this is ongoing - it is free of charge, but takes time to make it work. It can improve both current and bigger connections.
Current connection can be replaced with a different one.
More connections can be added. The firewall can be improved to spread the load among several different Internet connections.
Wireless
An alternative wireless connection makes access less dependent on the (possibly unreliable) copper wires into the building.
Wimaxx is cheap, but limited: bandwidth upstream + political decisions by the provider makes it less than ideal for IP telephony.
FWA is more expensive, but also more reliable. FWA is also upgradeable up to 100Mbit if needed.
FWA and ADSL connections can be bundled if using same provider, offering seemless failover between the different technologies.
Fibre optics
Probably the most reliable connection is fibre optics. Offered by TDC for several years, and since recently also by NRgi/Nianet.
NRgi offers 10Mbit/10Mbit "consumer" connetions for 399,-kr per month. Same fibres are offered as 10Mbit/10Mbit "professional" connections by Nianet for 3.000,- per month.
Binding period for professional connections are 1-3 years. Binding period for consumer connections is unknown.
Consumer connections are most likely not allowed for use at Homebase.
