Synopsis
1. IDEA: We would like together with Start-Up Company in Copenhagen, to develop a set of entrepreneurial tools and if time allows projects, training concepts and community activities to help integration of the ethnic minorities in socially troubled areas in Denmark.
2. NEED: There is an ever-growing need in the world for greater cultural understanding and Denmark is no exception. There is one group, in particular, who experiences vast marginalisation, great integration difficulties, unemployment and social poverty and those are the ethnic minorities in Denmark. Startup Company will be on the frontier of CSR while working on creating solutions on how to solve problems for ethnic minorities and the Danish society.
3. PURPOSE: This project must be realized to improve the cultural climate in the Danish Society. If we do not start taking responsibility for this group of people we loose a whole generation of creative minds who with the right guidance will benefit us all.
4. VALUES: We’re all frustrated with the way that the integration has gone in Denmark. We’d like to change the way the Danish population look upon ethnic groups in Denmark. We feel that there is a lack of compassion, fun, innovative solutions to integrate ethnic minorities in the society. We’ll create a simple tool that can be used locally (in the regions) over and over again. Create a huge success that will spread like rings in the water (through their existing network / as far as their home countries). Making the ethnic population reach full potential and flourish in a new way. We’ll use their own values (family bond, honour, religion, courage, creativity, adaptability, drive & responsibility (our assumption)) to make them into entrepreneurs. This will benefit the public sector and hopefully bring down the unemployment. We’ll make personal gain for the ethnic minority, more business for Startup Company, lowered unemployment in the Danish society – creating a win-win-win situation.
5. CONCEPT: We will in corporation with Startup Company, create a set of entrepreneurial tools that can be implemented in socially challenged areas in Denmark. We will use their knowledge and tools and blend it with our dynamic approach to product development.
6. TEAM: We believe our group possess first hand knowledge on the current challenges, knowledge on the business perspectives, knowledge on the areas of interest (both geographical and ethnological), a big portion of curiosity, creativity, persistence and leadership. We think that we have limited insight in public funding, the different political interests on the topic, ethnic grouping, market insight and at this point limited customer insight. As we see our group limitations, many of these are within the competencies of Startup Company.
7. STRUCTURE: We will be working in Copenhagen from our customer Startup Company’s facilities in IT-byen (Væksthuset). Here we will have office space for all for us. We will be able to have close contact with all members of Startup Company, enjoying the full potential of the company around David Madié, who is our primary contact at this time. We will hand in this synopsis in due time for our client to make comments and potential adjustments in order for us to reach the best common ground possible in the project. We will have one primary contact from our project group who as a starting point will be responsible for the overall communication with the client. Our hope, due to the physical placement, is that the day-to-day communication will end up being open and dynamic with us participating as a temporary part of Startup Company throughout the month of May. Our team will work with one project leader throughout the entire project, and different hosts will assist the project leader. This structure will ensure that the project is carried through with a shared responsibility, create a more holistic process and thereby a great learning experience for all members of the team. We will provide all partners, during the project, with written contracts underlining the rules of engagement and what to expect regarding end product and mutual areas of responsibility.
8. PRAXIS: After an introduction to Startup Company we will engage in the preject phase. During the preject we will determine which tools we will use in order to gather necessary information from and of our target group. The Preject will include tools such as: S.W.O.T.-analysis, Interests-analysis, information-analysis and risk-management. After concluded preject phase we will engage in a vast research phase. The research phase could include the following tools: Observations, voxpop, questions, interviews with experts in relevant subjects and workshops, just to name some of the tools that we could use. This phase will also be followed by evaluation. All these steps will ensure us with the necessary information needed to develop the end result.
9. FOCUS: We have chosen 3 geographical locations to focus on. These areas are Gellerup, Århus, Vollsmose, Odense and northwest in Copenhagen. Furthermore we will focus on the age group 19-40 years old, which have relations to these locations. Our focus will be on individuals that possess an entrepreneurial mind hidden within them – it is our task to extract these skills. During our research we will also focus on conducting qualitative research, and spend some time in finding the right people to ask the right questions. We believe this approach to be proper being given the time period we have for this project.
10. CUSTOMER: Our customer is Startup Company, which is the largest supplier of entrepreneurial courses to Danish companies and organisations. We (have) got in contact with this company through a course in Creative Business Design at the KaosPilots facilitated by the founder of startup company, David Madié. We are currently in a dialogue with David about the economical perspectives in the project. Our needs are very limited since we basically only need funding for transportation and housing and therefore we have not yet made a specific and binding economical contract. We have an open relationship with our partner and have had a preliminary meeting, where we have discussed needs and wishes from both sides. We have also agreed upon having a shared responsibility of keeping a good flow of communication. We have not yet made a contract specifying our areas of responsibility, as well as the role/mandate/responsibility of our customer. This will be done when we’ve got the final feedback from our customer. The end result will be one of the following two possibilities. Either a set of entrepreneurial tools to be used by the aspiring ethnic entrepreneurs, made from the results of our qualitative research. Or it will be a pilot project, consisting of one or more workshops highlighting the results found in our research. We will end off our part of the May project by having a project related event day with Startup Company on Friday the 25th of May, where we will hand over our product/results. By doing so we hopefully can inspire Startup Company to continue our work and the process around it, and keep up the development of our idea. After ending the May project we will also offer our selves in the role as consultants, to insure that Startup Company has access to all knowledge extracted from our research. We have discussed potential partners within the government, the public sector and celebrities. We have to clear these persons with our customer and their management, when we’ve found who has the necessary potential. We are in contact with The Global Citizen project group in Århus, with whom we will try to establish working relations to. The Association of Moderate and Democratic Muslims are also in our thoughts, when it comes to creating a network of potential partners. The municipalities in question will be approached with our idea, and hopefully be an integrated part of carrying it through.
