About

This page is about making it easier for scientists and other science stakeholders to get the information they need. At the moment, the project is very much a dream: nothing is fixed, and everything is editable. Help us shape the dream!

The problem

Researchers currently waste countless hours of their time trying to get the information they need: perhaps an up-to-date overview of a related field; new developments in their own; or perhaps any literature related to an entirely new field. For other science stakeholders, like business, sponsors, industry, journalist, politicians or the public at large it is almost impossible to know what the status quo of any field is: they have to rely on the experts.

What if it did not have to be this way? What if any science stakeholder could access the information they needed with a few clicks of a mouse?

The solution

We make it possible for people to post information on the web in such a way that browsers can more accurately single out the information needed. We do this by working together with existing service providers on developing a “meta format” of additional key words/text on each web page for browsers to use. In this way it will be easier to filter searches and produce more accurate information.

We also create a wiki science web, where anyone whom wishes can gain access to and develop/create ongoing literature overviews for any scientific topic.

This can be achieved by actively recruiting universities to adopt their own versions of the meta software required and by getting their undergraduate students to add their knowledge to the wiki science pages, then later continue with graduates adding theirs, then post-graduates and finally research level knowledge. In this way we evolve the wiki science web gradually, building a bridge across the knowledge gap that exists today between researchers and other stakeholders.

Open-source collaboration will enable us to create a web-based community that reduces the times it takes to overview any topic by giving every scientific topic its own page with an overview of the relevant literature, research and discussion that is ongoing for that topic. Each page also has references with links to scientific articles and other material hosted elsewhere on the Internet.

This is possible because anyone can edit any page by using Wiki Wiki technology. Users can even create new ones. In this way the user community is able to collaboratively pool their knowledge in one place, making it easy for anyone researching a topic to get a quick topic overview without having to spend two days in the library reading every single research paper dating back to the 1960’s.

There are many ways of financing the World Science Community. Although open, a mixture of government grants, sponsoring, and revenue from advertisement on the web pages might provide a realistic solution. The WSC should be a 4th sector company. This means that although it aims to be self-sustaining financially (not taking money away from other research), it works for the benefit of all, collaborating closely with non-government organizations, governments, businesses, and individuals in society.
